THE STORY AT A GLANCE

What you need to know

  • TradeStation Desktop is our top editorial pick for custom analysis and strategy development with EasyLanguage.
  • US$0 commissions can coexist with clearing, routing, regulatory, data, and account charges.
  • Compare the exact platform, account plan, order type, and market-data entitlement you will use.
  • Account eligibility, trading permissions, and computer requirements are separate from access to charting software.

Choose the trading workflow before the interface

Stock-trading platforms organize charts, watchlists, analysis, and orders in different ways. A trader building custom studies may prioritize a scripting environment; someone monitoring several layouts may care more about linked windows, keyboard controls, and data entitlements.

This guide covers eight platforms serving eligible U.S. individual brokerage customers. The fee comparison focuses on standard online U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs. Options, futures, borrowing, OTC securities, and special order programs have separate pricing or permissions. Opening an account and accessing software do not automatically qualify someone for every trading activity.

How we evaluated the eight

We reviewed current official platform pages, fee schedules, account information, and technical requirements. Selection emphasizes documented analysis tools, order workflows, access, and cost boundaries. Best-fit labels are editorial judgments; we did not measure execution quality, uptime, or investment results.

Fees were checked on October 24, 2026, in USD. A commission is only one cost component. Confirm the applicable plan, clearing and routing fees, market-data classification, ETF exceptions, and account charges. Simulated trading and historical strategy tests do not establish future live results.

1. TradeStation Desktop — best overall editorial pick

TradeStation Desktop is our first platform to evaluate for custom stock analysis and strategy development. RadarScreen scanning, advanced charts, the Matrix order interface, and EasyLanguage support a configurable workflow. EasyLanguage enables custom indicators and historical strategy testing; the Desktop environment is distinct from the newer TITAN X platform.

The current U.S. schedule lists US$0 standard U.S.-listed stock/ETF base commissions with volume-based clearing charges. Tier 1, covering 0–100,000 monthly shares, carries US$0.003 per share in clearing. Sub-dollar securities, direct routing, market data, and other services have additional or separate charges. A US$10 monthly inactivity fee can apply, subject to balance or activity waivers.

U.S. residents with a valid taxpayer identification or Social Security number can use the online account application. Confirm the current plan and exact platform features; older TS GO/TS SELECT descriptions should not be assumed to represent a new account's terms.

2. thinkorswim desktop — best for chart studies and simulated practice

Schwab's thinkorswim desktop combines customizable workspaces, technical studies, thinkScript custom analysis, watchlists, and paperMoney simulation. It suits traders who want to configure chart-based research and practice an order workflow before using it live.

Schwab brokerage clients pay no platform charge. Online U.S. exchange-listed NMS stocks and ETFs have US$0 commissions, with applicable industry charges remaining. Online OTC trades cost US$6.95, and broker assistance adds US$25, so the headline rate should not be extended to every equity order.

A standard Schwab brokerage account has no opening minimum. Normal platform access requires an account, while a separate Guest Pass offers a way to explore the software. Trading permissions and account eligibility still require their own checks.

3. Interactive Brokers TWS — best for detailed order control

Trader Workstation offers Mosaic layouts, scanners, conditional orders, and portfolio monitoring. Eligible U.S. individuals can open cash accounts from age 18; margin accounts require age 21.

IBKR Lite offers US$0 commissions on eligible U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs, with exceptions for overnight and recurring orders. Opening/closing auction, extended-hours, and sub-US$1 order volumes have a 10% monthly-share-volume condition affecting commission-free treatment.

IBKR Pro tiered pricing begins at US$0.0035 per share for the first 300,000 monthly shares, with a US$0.35 order minimum and applicable additional charges. Pro fixed pricing is a different schedule. Select the exact plan before estimating costs. Free streaming equity data is non-consolidated; other subscriptions can cost extra. TWS offers Windows, Mac, and Linux versions.

4. Fidelity Trader+ Desktop — best for multi-monitor Fidelity analysis

Fidelity's current advanced desktop offering is Trader+ Desktop, with customizable layouts, charting, streaming quotes, and position/order monitoring. Active Trader Pro Classic remains available, with sunsetting beginning in 2027; new evaluations should distinguish the products.

The platform is free. Standard online U.S. stock and ETF commissions are US$0, but designated Professional Equity Traders pay US$0.001 per share, rounded up to the nearest US$0.01 per order. A limited set of ETFs carries a US$100 transaction service fee.

Desktop requires Windows 11 or newer on x64 hardware, or macOS 14 or newer with an M1 or newer processor. Fidelity limits new accounts to U.S. residents. Check both device compatibility and the actual securities' fees before choosing a setup.

5. Power E*TRADE Pro — best for linked downloadable workspaces

Power E*TRADE Pro is the current downloadable platform, distinct from browser-based Power E*TRADE and the retiring older E*TRADE Pro. Its Windows and Mac versions offer linked windows, Live Action scans, chart trading, and custom speed keys.

Standard retail online U.S.-listed stock and ETF commissions are US$0. Regulatory or exchange charges and applicable service fees remain; OTC, foreign shares, and special-handling orders have exclusions.

Market Depth requires a real-time data subscription, so confirm entitlements rather than assuming all quote services are included. Clients obtain the software through their account login. Individual brokerage accounts are offered without an opening minimum, but identity verification and account-level trading restrictions remain part of access.

6. Webull Desktop — best for configurable cross-platform charts

Webull Desktop offers movable widgets, screeners, chart orders, hotkeys, and a price ladder on Windows, Mac, and Ubuntu Linux. Its layout flexibility is useful for traders comparing a downloaded workspace across those operating systems.

Eligible self-directed U.S. individual cash or margin accounts have US$0 U.S.-listed stock and ETF commissions, with applicable charges remaining. Certain algorithmic equity order types separately cost US$0.005 per share.

Data has its own price: Nasdaq Basic is free; TotalView is US$2.99 monthly for non-entity accounts, while streaming NBBO is US$9.99 monthly for nonprofessionals. Applicants must be at least 18, provide an SSN or ITIN and U.S. residential address, and meet residency or accepted-visa requirements. Confirm subscriptions and data classification.

7. Robinhood Legend — best for a browser-based workspace

Robinhood Legend provides custom layouts, linked widgets, technical indicators, and chart-based order entry in a browser. An approved Robinhood investing account is required. Base Legend has no additional platform charge and does not require Gold.

Standard electronic U.S.-listed stock and ETF commissions are US$0, while applicable regulatory, ADR, transfer, and other account charges can remain. Check the current fee schedule for the specific activity.

Legend supports specified browsers on Windows and macOS with minimum hardware requirements. Its capabilities differ from the mobile app and classic website. U.S. applicants must be at least 18, have a valid SSN and qualifying residential address, and satisfy citizenship, permanent-residency, or visa requirements. Verify that the browser workflow supports the features you need.

8. tastytrade desktop — best for stocks alongside risk-analysis tools

tastytrade's desktop platform combines a trading ladder, charting, and an analysis tab for risk and volatility scenarios. It is worth evaluating when a stock workflow sits alongside broader derivatives analysis, with permissions checked separately.

Stock and ETF commissions are US$0 to open and close. The current fee schedule adds US$0.0008 per share in clearing charges, plus applicable regulatory fees. The schedule separately lists a US$0.10 clearing charge per fractional-share transaction.

The broker offers individual cash and margin accounts, subject to identity verification and permissions. Its published U.S. margin guide excludes OTCBB and unlisted securities. Confirm computer compatibility and the exact account scope; the zero-commission headline does not establish free clearing or access to every type of stock.

Compare a realistic trading workflow

Choose the required charts, studies, order types, linked windows, and operating system first. Confirm which tools belong to the named desktop or browser platform and which require another application, account permission, or subscription.

Then price the same example orders, share volume, routing choice, and data package. Include clearing, service, inactivity, and transfer charges where relevant. Distinguish live consolidated quotes from a limited feed or snapshot.

Use available practice environments to learn order entry, cancellation, alerts, and connection recovery. Confirm how to reach broker support when software is unavailable. Platform selection should follow the documented workflow and costs; software features and simulated results do not promise investment returns.
