What you need to know
- Keep page locations and source evidence with extracted fields.
- Evaluate layout relationships and real scan conditions.
- Use validation and targeted human review for consequential fields.
Keep the evidence attached to the extraction
Business documents encode meaning through layout as well as text. A number may belong to a particular table column; a footnote may qualify a chart; a signature may apply only to one version. A multimodal system can process visual material, but the application still needs a way to show how an extracted claim relates to the original page.
For a document workflow, retain source identifiers and page locations alongside extracted fields. Where possible, display a relevant crop or highlight for review. Distinguish an observed value from an inference. An application that silently fills a missing date with a plausible guess creates a different risk from one that marks the date as unresolved.
Test the document conditions people actually submit
Include low-quality scans, rotated pages, dense tables, handwriting if supported, and documents in the required languages. Evaluate relationships between fields as well as isolated character accuracy. A perfectly recognized total attached to the wrong invoice is still an incorrect result.
Hugging Face's multimodal documentation describes message content that can include different media types and model-specific processing. The practical implication is to test the entire preprocessing and model path. Image resizing, page selection, and ordering can affect what evidence reaches the model before it starts answering.
Make review proportional to the consequence
Use deterministic checks for totals, expected formats, and required fields where available. Send conflicting or missing evidence to a person with the original document in view. Track correction patterns to find weak document classes and improve the pipeline. Start with an assisted workflow when the cost of a mistaken field is significant, then change the review boundary only when task-specific evidence supports doing so.
