THE STORY AT A GLANCE

What you need to know

  • Document tool effects beyond their input schema.
  • Authorize each action for the user and resource involved.
  • Test retries and ambiguous write outcomes.

Standardize a connection without hiding its meaning

The Model Context Protocol provides a common interface for connecting AI applications with external capabilities and context. A shared protocol can reduce the need to invent a custom connection for every pairing of assistant and service. It does not make every exposed operation equally safe or understandable.

A tool named update_record needs more explanation than a field schema. Which record can change? Does it overwrite omitted values? Can it be retried safely? What does success mean if the remote service queues the work? Write a tool description and response contract that make those semantics explicit for both the model and the engineers maintaining the integration.

Carry the right identity to the action

The integration should authorize an operation for the actual user and context. A successful connection is not blanket permission to access every resource behind the service. Review the available scope, how credentials are stored and refreshed, and how the system behaves when authorization changes during a task.

Keep destructive or externally visible operations narrow. Separate discovery, preview, and execution when that makes a change easier to review. Validate arguments in the service implementation, and return errors that let the assistant explain what remains undone without exposing secrets or internal details.

Test the connection under interruption

An integration test should cover a missing permission, an expired connection, a partial result, and a timeout after a possible write. Check that retries do not duplicate work. Version tools deliberately and test old clients where compatibility matters. The protocol is a shared foundation; a dependable integration is the product of clear semantics, appropriate authority, and recovery behavior the application can explain.
