THE STORY AT A GLANCE

What you need to know

  • Retain available origin and editing metadata.
  • Distinguish a verified provenance claim from factual truth.
  • Combine technical signals with contextual review.

Make origin a question in the workflow

When a team receives an image, recording, or document, its contents are only one part of the review. Who supplied it? Which version is being considered? Has it been edited, and is there a record of those edits? These questions become more relevant when content can be generated or changed quickly and then move through multiple tools.

C2PA develops specifications for recording and verifying provenance information associated with media. Such information can help describe an asset's source and history. Its usefulness depends on the available assertions, the trust placed in their signers, and whether the associated information survives the workflow.

Verify what the evidence actually claims

A valid provenance record is not a general certificate that every claim inside an asset is true. It can support a narrower judgment about recorded origin or modification. Keep that distinction visible to reviewers. Likewise, missing provenance is not proof that an asset is false; many legitimate sources and processing tools may not provide or preserve it.

An enterprise intake process should retain available provenance metadata and record where it was checked. Avoid stripping the information during routine transformations when the workflow depends on it. Document how the system handles an invalid, unavailable, or unrecognized record, and provide a route to manual review.

Combine provenance with other verification

Use source confirmation, contextual checks, and subject matter review alongside technical provenance. For AI-assisted analysis, preserve the link between the asset, the evidence available at processing time, and the resulting output. This makes later review possible if questions arise. Provenance is most valuable as a clear additional signal in a decision process whose responsibilities remain explicit.
