THE STORY AT A GLANCE

What you need to know

  • Test conceptual questions and exact identifiers separately.
  • Apply document permissions before exposing results.
  • Inspect source and indexing failures before expanding the pipeline.

Different queries need different signals

Someone searching for a return policy may describe the concept without using the document's terminology. Someone searching for an exact error code needs that precise string to carry substantial weight. Enterprise search must support both behaviors, often inside the same session. A single retrieval technique can struggle when the query mixes general intent with a highly specific identifier.

Hybrid search combines more than one retrieval method. In a common design, lexical retrieval finds matching terms and vector retrieval finds similar representations of meaning. Elastic documents reciprocal rank fusion as one way to merge result rankings. The fusion method determines which candidates reach the user or a downstream language model.

Evaluate on the vocabulary your organization uses

Create a query collection containing acronyms, product names, misspellings, identifiers, and natural language requests. Have people with domain knowledge identify relevant results. Measure retrieval for important query types separately, because a better overall average can hide a regression in exact identifier lookup.

Keep permission filtering in the retrieval path. A relevant document is still an invalid result if the requesting user cannot access it. Check that snippets, suggestions, and generated answers respect the same boundary. Ranking quality and access control should be evaluated together for the experience people actually receive.

Add ranking complexity when the evidence calls for it

Inspect failed queries before adding another model to the pipeline. A missing document, weak title, stale index, or inconsistent metadata may explain the problem. Try reranking or query rewriting against the same test collection, including latency and cost. Preserve a way to understand why an important document appeared. Search quality improves through better source material and measured retrieval changes, with model sophistication serving a specific purpose.
