THE STORY AT A GLANCE

What you need to know

  • Document semantics alongside field types.
  • Make ownership and downstream consumers explicit.
  • Test business meaning when a schema or source changes.

A field name is not a definition

A customer_status field might describe billing eligibility in one system and account activity in another. An AI assistant receiving both values cannot reliably resolve the organizational ambiguity by being better at language. Before expanding a data pipeline, document the meaning of important fields, the system of record, the responsible owner, and the circumstances in which a value changes.

A data contract can be a short, maintained agreement between producers and consumers. It should explain structure, semantics, freshness, quality expectations, and access restrictions. Include examples of valid records and known exceptions. The document becomes useful when an engineer can decide how a downstream feature should behave without reconstructing the source team's unwritten assumptions.

Make change visible to consumers

Data structures evolve. Apache Iceberg's documentation describes schema evolution, including adding, removing, and renaming fields through table metadata. Technical support for a schema change does not tell a consumer whether the business meaning stayed the same. A field can remain a string while its interpretation changes completely.

Treat semantic changes as events that require communication and validation. Keep compatibility expectations explicit. A downstream extraction model or report may need new examples even when no type check fails. Track who consumes a dataset and give those owners a predictable way to test proposed changes.

Monitor the promises the product relies on

Prioritize quality checks according to the application. An internal knowledge assistant may rely on current ownership and access metadata. A forecasting pipeline may depend on complete event timestamps. Alert an accountable person when a critical expectation fails, and define whether the consumer should pause, fall back, or show an uncertainty message. More data creates value when users can understand what it means and what they are allowed to do with it.
